About the Home
Built in the 1950's, Melrose is an original and low maintenance, solid clinker brick home. The home retains many of its original Art Deco features, including bakelite light fittings, decorative etched glass doors in the lounge room, decorative fire place surround, and the original bathroom tiling and fittings.
The front of the house is elevated from street level and is double storey at the rear of the property with views. With double brick construction upstairs and on the lower level, the house is very cool in summer and is easy to keep warm in winter. It has gas central heating and two air-conditioning units, as well as a Jetmaster fireplace. There is firewood on the side of the house under full cover near the kitchen. The kitchen and bathrooms have been updated over the last twenty years. Premium curtains and quality carpets have been used in the property. All fencing, gutters, and copper water pipes (including connection from the street mains water) have also been updated.
The gas heating, hot water system, and electrical wiring have also all been updated over the years, and the roof is fully insulated with high density batts. A new high quality digital antenna has also been installed in the roof and there is full security protection around the property. There are 5 telephone sockets and we are connected to Optus cable. The property has been well maintained over the last twenty years.
The major attraction of this area is access to many local facilities - including private schools, local shopping centres, and very good public transport across Melbourne from the Box Hill transport hub. The Mont Albert Primary School and Koonung Secondary College are highly regarded, and the Box Hill medical preccinct with many specialist medical suites and the Box Hill and Epworth Hospital are in easy walking distance.
You can sit out in the rear garden and be amongst the birds (various species of native birds, Rosellas, Parrots, butterflies, and owls) and the trees, and be protected from the wind and the hot summer sun and enjoy a barbecue. The garden is well established with many trees and a large Pin Oak tree (Significant tree register) which provide coolness in the summer and privacy. All it needs is a “new family” to move in and continue the experience of Melrose.
Many people ask about maintaining the garden and how much work would be involved. Actually, the garden is designed to be quite low maintenance with a relaxed informal feel. We find we do a tidy up twice a year with small amounts of weeding, pruning, and lawn maintenance in between. Autumn leaves and lawn clippings are recycled as mulch for the gardens which helps reduce summer watering.
